Chennai: Inspection teams from Anna University (Chennai) have evaluated engineering colleges affiliated to it on the basis of the quality of education provided. The evaluation will be useful for aspirants to judge the standing of an engineering college.

The university has made public the findings of inspection teams (see box) in respect of the different courses offered by 87 self-financing engineering colleges, in addition to the assessment reports of the Measi Academy of Architecture and the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology. “The inspection marks secured by the newly started engineering colleges during the academic year 2008-09 and other remaining colleges are under scrutiny and will be published later,” vice-chancellor P Mannar Jawahar said.

The inspection teams have assessed and awarded marks on a scale of 100 to every undergraduate course offered in each of these engineering colleges based on the strength of the laboratory, library and classroom infrastructure (45 marks), quality and qualification of faculty (45 marks) and general ambience (10 marks).

The university grants affiliation to a course provided it passes muster by scoring a minimum of 50 marks.

An analysis of the ratings in six major courses — Electronics and Communication ECE), Electrical and Electronics (EEE), Computer Science, Information Technology, Civil and Mechanical Engineering — reveal that a majority of them have secured over 60 marks. Interestingly, only 24 colleges offered the Civil Engineering course.
While the RMK College finds a place among the top five institutions in as many as five courses, its sister institution RMD College is rated among the top five institutions in three courses. The Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College has bagged one of the top five slots in four courses.

The following colleges have secured the top marks in different courses: Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering and Technology in Tiruvallur in Civil Engineering (95.3 marks); Misrimal Navajee Munoth Jain College in Thoraipakkam in CSE (98); RMD College in Gummidipoondi in EEE (99.5); St Joseph’s College in Sholinganallur in ECE (97.6); SKP College in Tiruvannamalai in Mechanical Engineering (97.5) and SSN College in Kalavakkam in Information Technology (97).
